The truth is that the longer term fiscal situation in the U.S. Will probably be resolved with the 2012 presidential election. If Obama is reelected, cuts will be minor, and the U.S. Will sink further into debt. If a Republican challenger is elected, cuts will be swifter. Social welfare is not like defence or healthcare, the average citizen does not believe more money should be spent on it. Modern trends tend to indicate that people prefer these kinds of activities to be none by not-for-profit organizations and churches rather than by the government. The truth is that America is polarized on this issue. The recent fiasco involving ACORN is evidence of this. Many people simply do not trust government financed organizations who say they are there to help the poor. Many of these institutions have lost the trust of the people. The trend seems to be away from government spending on this issue and more towards private sector funding of such programs.
